BLACK TUESDAY JAZZ BAND
Hal Needham, Leader, Trumpet
by Maurice Huff email: rhuff@c-zone.net

Fellow Jazzers, it’s been two years since this band has been in Redding. They’ve had some sad changes in musicians - Pat Blucher, piano, had to leave due to medical reasons in the family. Their leader, Dave Acheson, Banjo, moved to Wichita for his new job and happiness.

Their sound, however, has still be nothing short of phenomenal. I heard them at the Sac. Jubilee - this was their 4th year there. The band has played all over the Sacramento area, playing everything from trad to swing. They say "music is our thing ...and by golly - be done with financial disasters."

A real winner on this band is their vocalist SUZANNE WIGGINS. What a singer. I could listen to her day and night.

But, I can’t forget their Leader, Hal Needham. He has been playing his trumpet since Jr. High and the last 20 years, he’s played Trad Jazz with the NO NAME J.B., ABSOLUTE J.B., and now BLACK TUESDAY.

Rick Eaton, trombone, was raised in a musical family and studied piano and trombone at an early age.

Gene Mondro, clarinet, started playing his horn back in high school - played classical clarinet with Henry Ford Orchestra and has played in local dance bands since the 70’s.

Dave Sieber, tuba, began his career on trumpet and changed to tuba - played for 19 years at Scarlet LaRues.

Tom Brewer, drums, has played drums since a teen in about every type and style of music from ‘rock ‘n’ roll’ to Trad jazz.

Don Schumacher, banjo, started playing at Shakey’s Pizza way back in the 60s.

Cleve Baker, piano, is new to the band - and from hearing him at the Jubilee, he’s a fine addition to the band.

EVERYBODY WILL LOVE THIS BAND, FOR SURE.
