REX ALLEN -
TROMBONE - VIBIST - BANDLEADER
by Maurice Huff
Fellow Jazzers, this month, we have the return of a popular musician, Rex Allen. He was
born in San Leandro in 1952. He is one 'bright star' who has a musical history that reads
well above most musicians.
Rex has done four national tours with his Big Band - has performed with The Modernaires,
Beryl Davis and Dick Haymes, Jr. He also starred in the 1997 "50 City Tour Battle of the
Big Bands".
At the age of 24, Rex was jazz trombone soloist with the new Tommy Dorsey Orchestra
for 6 years - and for 6 years, he led the new Gene Krupa Orchestra. He produced the
Tommy Dorsey Swinging Years Show with singing star, Connie Haines.
Rex Allen has shared stages with jazz and swing luminaries Lionel Hampton, Helen Forrest,
Helen O'Connel, Phil Harris, Milt Hinton and the Pied Pipers.
He has a weekly radio show on KNOB, San Francisco, called "America Swings Again". Rex
Allen has been a guest star at the Sacramento Jazz Jubilee, Indianapolis Jazz Artists
Musicale, Chicago's Big Horn Festival and the Los Angeles Classic.
He plays a vintage 1966 Sterling Silver King 3D Trombone. He's quoted as saying
dixieland and swing are a timeless music as fresh and alive as it was 40-50 years ago.
Fellow Jazzers - our talented local musicians can hardly wait to back up REX ALLEN and
we'll have hot jazz in Redding on August 19th. I hope we’ll see/hear “dueling mallets”
again between REX ALLEN and "our jazz society man", JACK WHALEY.
