CUSTER'S LAST BAND (reunion!)
Jerry McKenzie and Jan Sutherland(McKenzie)
by Maurice Huff
Fellow Jazzers! what a surprise I have for you this month! CUSTER'S LAST BAND, one of the north State's favorite bands and, certainly, Rivercity Jazz Society's crowd pleaser forevermore will play for us.
Due to Jan & Jerry being in Sacramento on Saturday, December 19th, Pat Patterson and I talked them into bringing their original band here to play for us. When they used to live in Davis, CUSTER'S LAST BAND played in most of the Sacramento Jazz Jubilees - and in fact, all over the country! In Redding, they were always the band our jazz club loved for our December 'Christmas month' concert.
The sad day came when the government started closing bases; Jerry was working in the Vallejo Naval base when it closed. They moved to San Diego to work there at the base. Their love of music continued and they play with some local bands - and started PRIMETIME JAZZ BAND, which was at Sacramento this year.
In October, I listened to them play with the 20TH CENTURY JAZZ BAND - along with some of my favorite musicians, like Jackson Stock (Abalone Stompers), and Flip Oakes (South Market Street). Listening to Jan sing and Jerry play again was most gratifying.
All of the CUSTER'S LAST BAND musicians are thrilled to come and play for us again ... so let's show this band that Rivercity Jazz Society is as strong as ever ... and let's fill our beautiful jazz room to capacity.
