ZENITH JAZZ BAND
EARL SCHEELAR, Leader, Clarinet/Cornet
by Maurice Huff

Fellow Jazzers, the ZENITH JAZZ BAND plays the “Old New Orleans” style, the “original jazz”, which developed in the Crescent City around the turn of the century.

Jazz is the mixing together of blues, ragtime, military marches, music from minstrel shows and circuses, hymns, and popular songs of the day - and other material the New Orleans musicians wanted to incorporate. They were just playing music that made people happy and want to dance - that’s exactly what the ZENITH JAZZ BAND does !!!

The “Zenith” does not use written arrangements, although each instrument has its specific function and each musician creats his part, based on what the other musicians in the band are playing. The rhythm section plays hard driving four-beat rhythm while the front line weaves a musical tapestry. The emphasis is on ensemble playing, rather than solo numbers. The band plays with lots of dynamics and doesn’t rely on “fast and loud” to excite the audience.

The vocalist, Genny Haley, sings the classic blues style of Ma Rainey and Bessie Smith, as well as Gospel and old standards.

I hope we have a good showing for this band; all of the musicians from ZENITH have been playing for many years. Earl plays a very melodic and rhythmic counter- melody to enhance the music, for over 40 YEARS. Come & Listen, Dr. Chet Moore! BILL BARDIN - Trombone, is considered by many as one of the finest traditional trombone players in the world. In 1942, at age 17, he recorded with the wartime replacement for the Lu Watters band at the Dawn Club. PETER ALLEN, bass, has been playing since the early 40’s. FRANK TATEOSIAN, banjo, playing since the 50’s. ROBERT YOUNG, cornet, plays all over the bay area. HENK WAGNER, drums, plays in multiple bands... AND last, but not going to be here because the trip would be hard on him due to his age, is BOB HELM, clarinet. I still get to hear Bob 3-4 times a year, but go to the bay area to hear him. Bob is certainly a legend in this music.
