ALCATRAZ ANGELS JAZZ BAND
TONY POLIGONO, Leader, Drums
by Maurice Huff (email: rhuff@c-zone.net)
Fellow Jazzers, this month we have a very exciting band from the Bay Area.
The ALCATRAZ ANGELS JAZZ BAND plays a style which is reminiscent of
some of the Red Nichol’s bands of the 20’s and 30’s and is a very danceable
blend of two and four beat tunes. This great band is a group of veteran jazz
musicians from various parts of northern California who have come together
to provide music for the *dixielanders*.
Tony Poligono has been playing drums for 58 years (!) professionally
throughout the Bay Area. In addition to playing extensively in the jazz
circuit, he has held steady engagements at dinner and social clubs, including
one club for 8 years and another club for 7. He got his first drum set at the
age of six, and played in the Navy dance band before settling on his current
Dixieland style. THE ALCATRAZ ANGELS is the realization of his dream to
put together a real New Orleans style band.
In addition to Tony, this band has some very experienced jazz musicians:
Dick Williams, cornet, Music Director, played in the Marine Corps, JAZZIN’
BABIES, TULEBURG, and other bands in the area - plus his band, DICK
WILLIAMS AND HIS JAZZ ADVOCATES.
Rich Owens, piano, plays all over the bay area in at least 5 or 6 bands.
Jack Wiecks, banjo, has played in 7 different bands in the area.
Mike Harryman, tuba/Bass Sax, has been playing since age 14, is very well known around the Bay Area.
Jack Gerken, trombone, has played Dixieland since the 50’s plus with the PACIFIC COAST
RAGTIMERS.
THIS BAND WILL TAKE AWAY THE FEBRUARY *WINTERY BLUES*, FOR SURE ! DON’T MISS THIS BAND.
