THE NIGHT HAWKS JAZZ BAND
Ron McGehee, Leader/Sax/Clarinet
by Maurice Huff

FELLOW JAZZERS - while going through some of my papers and jazz programs, I was reading this nice article on the band we’re having this month. Rememberting back to 1986, our first Redding Jazz Festival - and all the nine out-of-town bands who played.

The festival really had the best: Desert City Six, Hot Frogs, Oregon Jazz Band, Your Father’s Mustache, Black Diamond, Fulton Street, Mt. Shasta Strut, Monterey Jass Band and Tuleburg.

BUT what was noticeably nice was all the local bands playing. Listen to THIS local lineup of bands: Local All Stars, Razz MaJazz, North Street Ramblers, Grandma’s Kids, Dixie Chords, Lou White, Night Hawks, Satin Sounds, Modaji.

They played in several locations: Mt. Shasta Mall, Albertson’s front, Downtown Mall, Lorenz Park, St. Joseph’s Church.

The NIGHT HAWKS, in 1986, was then led by Roy Street, playing guitar/banjo. Charlotte Roe was playing piano; Ted Owens, drums; Joe Estes, trombone/band director; Ron McGehee, tenor sax and clarinet; Gene Rother, sax/piano. Even back then, the NIGHT HAWKS really sounded good. But, for those who were at our January Dance last year, you heard them play the finest music a person can hear.

So, get out your dancing shoes and your partying mood - because they are playing for us again THIS year. Ron McGehee and his fellow NIGHT HAWKS play from 7-10 p.m., January 22nd.

Ron McGehee, clarinet-sax; Jack Whaley, piano-vibes; Gene Chord, cornet; Harry Blaesing, bass; Joe Walker, trombone; and Ron’s grandson, Chris Quilala, on drums.

EVERYBODY ! COME ! HAVE A GOOD TIME.
