ABOUT JAZZ
by K. O. Eckland

"Jazz is not an easy music to play, despite its misleading apparent simplicity,
which explains its lack of popularity with young musicians. Generally, new artists on the jazz scene
are those who grew tired of the fenced-in, ritualized structures of popular music,
and of performing with a bunch of musical speedbumps!
They began looking for challenges and soon realized that jazz was the only road they could travel to find satisfaction.

JAZZ SONGS ARE MUSICAL SNOWFLAKES.
What you hear are creations of the moment that will never sound the same when played again. The reason for this is that jazz musicians play the music, not the composer, and in so doing, are afforded the pleasure of translating ... re-composing, if you will ... a group of notes into a personal impression with very few ground rules to follow.

Jazz is cool, even when it's hot ! It has a soothing effect on the soul, and it can play with the emotions.
It talks to you, tells you stories. It can make you smile or make you sad.

For such a seemingly basic music, it's very civilized and has its own pleasingly well-grounded personality. And it's the classical music of America, the only art form we've given to the world to share and enjoy.
It's been around for a while, and it'll be around long after we're gone."
