BOB ROMANS, Leader,Cornet
CELL BLOCK SEVEN
by Maurice Huff
Fellow Jazzers - this month, we’re going to have a very different Sunday Concert. We won’t
have any local jam sets between the Guest Band sets. Instead, CELL BLOCK SEVEN will play
(3) 45 minute sets for us - then, the most magnificent Youth Band, The BARKIN’ DAWG, will
play two sets for us.
This CB7 Band, created and led by Bob Romans, will be a real treat for RJS. Some of
our members will remember them from the Prune Festival this year. The BDJB, Youth Band,
will be playing for “tips” - when the hat is passed, show them your appreciation. They have
played at the Sacramento Jazz Jubilee and some of the local festivals. These young’uns are
very proficient.
The CELL BLOCK SEVEN is a group of musicians with many talents and untold years of
experience. Cornet player and Leader, Bob Romans, is a retired band instructor from the Lodi
schools. They really like to promote the west coast Trad sound and the Bay City Band of the
50s. They also have three Euphoniums which they combine their talents, creating different
sounds from fast, exciting trios to smooth and mellow blues, all in great low brass harmony.
The Band musicians are: Bob Romans, cornet; Tom Downs, tuba; Daryl Hosick, piano; Kurt
Abell, banjo; Bill Gunter, washboard/drums; Fred Spitzer, cornet; Dick Bowman, trombone;
Duane Ewing, clarinet/soprano sax.
What a nice Jazz Sunday this is going to be !!!!!
