MIKE STACK, Cornet-Leader
SAN FRANCISCO FEETWARMERS
by Maurice Huff (email: rhuff@c-zone.net)
Fellow Jazzers ! What a treat we’re going to have this month. Mike has
promised me that he will play all sets of Duke Ellington’s music. I’ve heard
this band many times and the listeners will be mesmerized. The dancers will
hear the sweetest music this side of heaven ... (a little poetic license, here,
folks !)
The San Francisco Feetwarmers perform hot classic jazz of the foot-
stomping roaring twenties. Their repertoire spans the music of King Oliver,
Morton, Bechet, Armstrong and early Ellington, rags and Morton solos are
featured on piano. This band’s name pays homage to two great clarinet
players: Johnny Dodds and his Chicago Footwarmers - and Sidney Bechet and
his New Orleans Footwarmers.
Mike Slack, Leader/Cornet, is from the United Kingdom. He came to the
bay area via New York, where he led the Bourbon St. Six and appeared with
pianist Bob Greene and drummer Freddie Moore. A King Oliver sideman, Mike
is also familiar to local jazz fans as a founding member of the New Revival
Jazzmen and for his work with the Black Diamond and Jelly Roll Jazz Bands.
Fellow jazzers, I overwhelmed with having this band come to Redding.
Not only does Mike bring his great music, but the other treat is the reat of
his musicians. Every one is a legend in the bay area and abroad. BOB
MIELKE, tr; RICHARD HADLOCK, cl; PETER ALLEN, bass; HENK WAGNER,
dr; JIM LOCKIE-BROWN, bj; and BILL GOULD, piano. In fact, I wish I had
more space to share a history about all these great musicians. You’ll see.
