GOLD COAST JAZZ BAND
from Napa
PHIL STIERS-Leader/Sax
by Maurice Huff
Fellow Jazzers, I’m really happy that this band is coming to play for us.
I’ve seen all the musicians play at one time or another, and they are good!
Phil Stiers and his wife, Jan, used to live in Eugene, Oregon, while playing
with Emerald City Jazz - later moved to Phoenix, playing with Desert City
Six. In California, Phil has played for Black Diamond JB and That’s Jazz JB
Most people will remember Jan, who played piano for Professor Plum’s band
for 10 years!
Bill Jeffries, trombone, (played with Quail Ridge JB, Black Diamond JB,
Jazz, Etc.J.B.) has a distinctive style which combines trad “tailgate” of New
Orleans with later influences of San Francisco’s famed jazz bands.
Candy Sealy, a registered nurse, is classically trained, playing tuba with
the Santa Rosa Symphony. She now embraces Trad Jazz, which is a Godsend
to GCJB.
Allen Grissette, drums, - is also remembered as drummer for Devil
Mountain JB. He’s considered one of the best “trad jazz time-keepers” in
the area; he’s played in most of the major festivals in the U.S. plus Japan,
Mexico, Canada, and Europe.
Jeff Green, banjo, Sonoma. He plays jazz there and in Santa Rosa, Napa
areas - anywhere he can find Trad Jazz.. He began banjo lessons at age 10 -
loved it - and he’ll show us Sunday !
Zane Woodworth - trumpet/ flugel horn. He began trumpet at age 9; at
age 16, he began his professional career. He’s played with Woody Herman &
Ernie Heckscher’s bands at the Fairmont.
FELLOW JAZZERS - LET’S GIVE THIS BAND A “FIRST TIME TO
REDDING “ BIG, HAPPY WELCOME. You’ll love them !
