Mt. Shasta Mall: Coming from adjacent counties, many local schools – high school and middle school - practice - then perform for the community – with great success. For these Youth Jazz Band Concerts, many local businesses participated financially as Sponsors... Other similar events are planned annually. It is our hope and intention to bring more news about this event each year...cuz THE JOINT WAS JUMPIN' during each event !

ON APRIL 27, 2002, THE FOLLOWING SCHOOLS BANDS (in order of appearance) PERFORMED BEFORE A PACKED "FOOD COURT" IN THE MT. SHASTA MALL, REDDING, CALIFORNIA...

  • ANDERSON HIGH SCHOOL
  • MOUNTAIN VIEW MIDDLE SCHOOL
  • TRINITY HIGH SCHOOL
  • PARSONS JR. HIGH SCHOOL
  • NORTH COW CREEK SCHOOL
  • FOOTHILL HIGH SCHOOL
  • BISHOP QUINN H.S./ST. FRANCIS MIDDLE SCHOOL
  • BIDWELL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, Red Bluff

RIVERCITY JAZZ SOCIETY and the MT. SHASTA MALL presented to the Redding community the Second AND *THIRD* Annual Youth Jazz Band Concert.
augmented by three local professional bands in 2001.
At the centrally located Mt. Shasta Mall, on March 31, 2001, and APRIL 27, 2002,
    from morning 'til late afternoon,
the public enjoyed a FREE "MINI-FESTIVAL" - if you will.
The music selections had a range from swing to big band to jazz. HOW ABOUT THAT ???

This all-day event allowed the public to be able to 'see' and 'hear' the strides musical education has made in our local schools. In the previous year, the opportunity to perform live, before parents, friends, peers and jazz lovers was enough incentive to these students to 'last a lifetime' ... so the saying goes.

Do you see anyone you know ??

It is the dual purpose of the society to foster the continuation of jazz music
and to encourage our local youth in their musical education.

"PASSING OF THE TORCH" is the slogan of all jazz societies ...
    which is to say, the school provides the 'reading of music' education;
THEN, the music instructors AND the experienced jazz artists illustrate
the syncopation and improvisation of these same musical notes...

    AND VOILA !!

    JAZZ HAPPENS !

... and in that instant, the younger generation WILL ENSURE the music's survival.
The posture 'loosens up'... one shoulder drops to accent a note...
the body begins to move back and forth...
first, the right leg bends in rhythm, then the left foot is tapping to the beat...
then, the instrument is pointing toward the ceiling for maximum volume ...
and, comes AN AWAKENING of *JAZZ IMPROV*.

NORTH COW CREEK ELEMENTARY, ST. FRANCIS MIDDLE SCHOOL,
ANDERSON HIGH SCHOOL, CENTRAL VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL,
    AND FOOTHILL HIGH SCHOOL bands
will participate in the Jazz Band Day, held in the Sears Court section of the mall.

The three local professional bands -
DIXIE CHORDS, RIVER CITY ALL STARS,
and STRAIGHT AHEAD SWING BAND (email: redfisch@shasta.com)
    - augmented the musical program providing an array of toe-tapping jazz and swing tunes
to the delight of everyone within hearing range !!!
(maybe even into the next block!)

Since 1986, Redding folks and 'jazzers' from all over
have enjoyed the annual Shasta Jazz Festival...
    until this year's cancellation.
    WAY BACK THEN,
SOME EVEN WATCHED THROUGH A KNOTHOLE IN THE FENCE...

RIVERCITY JAZZ SOCIETY stepped forward and staged the Youth Jazz Band Concert,
hoping the community gets behind this effort with attendance and applause.
This year, we looked for Sponsors to provide encouragement and monetary assistance
to our Youth Program. All schools who participated in this youth concert
shared the net proceeds to advance their musical programs.

RIVERCITY JAZZ SOCIETY feels the enthusiasm
to keep the Jazz Festival *SPIRIT* alive in Redding.

You were all invited to attend.
Thanks for coming up to say "hello" to our volunteers ...
AND WHO KNOWS ?? ... TWO THOUSAND TWO WILL PROVIDE ANOTHER PROGRAM FOR YOU (?)
