THE RINE CARTER FAMILY OF OHIO

FIRST GENERATION

Rine CARTER was born on April 17, 1815 in Ohio. His first name has varient spellings in various records; Rine; Ryne; Rhine; Rion; Ryan. Not much, at this time, is know of Rine's early life. Fairfield County probate records seem to indicate he lived all his life near Rushville in Richland Township of said county. In the 1850 census of Fairfield County two other CARTER families are listed. I believe that the William and George CARTER are most likely his older brothers. If that is correct then Rine's parents may have come from Virginia. Rine's son, Henry, on his death certificate it listed Rine as born in Virginia.

Rine married Sarah Caroline CROMER on December 5, 1843 in Fairfield County, Ohio. Caroline was born on November 24, 1827 in Fairfield County, Ohio [S2]. She is the daughter of Jacob and Margaret Bartholomew CROMER. They had the following children: Mary Elizabeth CARTER, William Henry CARTER, Lusinda Catherine CARTER, Samuel Jacob CARTER, Jefferson Homer CARTER, Margaret Ellen CARTER, John Edson CARTER and Clement Rine CARTER.

According to census records Rine was a farmer. The probate records indicate they owned 29.86 acres of land in Fairfield County. This land is described as part of the W 1/2 of the NW 1/4 of Section 16, of Township 17 in Range 17. He died on September 4, 1863 near Rushville, Fairfield County, Ohio [S1]. It appears that Caroline moved to Mercer County in about 1864. According to family tradition some of Caroline's CROMER kin moved her and the children to Mercer County. In the next couple of years Caroline lost Clement, Lusinda and Jefferson. Clement 7 months old and Lusinda 15 years old died in 1864 and Jefferson 10 years old died in 1865. They are all buried at The Ellis Cemetery near Montezuma.

Caroline remarried on June 11, 1879 to Joshua ROBERTS. In 1883 her nearly 22 year old son John died. She died on January 11, 1903 near Montezuma, Mercer County, Ohio [S2]. Caroline was buried in January 1903 in The Ellis Cemetery near Montezuma, Mercer County, Ohio [S2].
