SECOND GENERATION

John MALLARD (George2, Peter1) was born about 1742 in Craven County (now Jones County), North Carolina. He grew up in what is now Jones County near Trenton. He married Mary BURNETT in about 1774 in Craven County (now Jones County) North Carolina. She was born in about 1754 probably in North Carolina. They had the following children: William MALLARD, Nancy MALLARD, John MALLARD, Jr., James MALLARD, Sarah MALLARD, Catherine MALLARD, George MALLARD, II, Asa MALLARD and Dorcas MALLARD.

It appears from land records that John moved to Duplin County at about the same time as his father 1777 or 1778. The following is found in Duplin County Deed Book 5, Page 441 "January 18, 1778 - Alexander Dickson to John Mallard 40 Pounds for 100 acres, being the lands whereon William Cook formerly lived on the West side of the NE River of Cape Fear on the West side of said river above Thomas Webbs' line. Land was granted by patent dated 21 Dec. 1763 to Patrick Powell to Archabald Gillispie and from Archabald Gillispie to Elija Atkins from him to his granter by deed dated the 19th Jan. 1770. Witness: Anthony Miller, Robert Twilly and Richard Miller."

In the 1786 State Census of Duplin County, John is listed as the head of a household. There are four Males and three females listed in the home. One male is listed as 21 to 60 years old, the other three are listed as under 21 years old. Those four males would most likely be: John MALLARD, William MALLARD, John MALLARD, Jr., and James MALLARD. The three females would most likely be: Mary Burnett MALLARD, Nancy MALLARD, and Sarah MALLARD. Cannot find a John MALLARD in the Duplin County 1790 census. In the 1800 Federal Census of Duplin County, John is listed as the head of a household. There are six males and four females listed in the household. One male is listed as 45 years or older (John MALLARD, Sr.), three males are listed as 16 to 25 years old (William MALLARD, John MALLARD, Jr. and James MALLARD) and two males are listed as under 10 years old (George MALLARD, II and Asa MALLARD). One female is listed as 26 to 44 years old (Mary Burnett MALLARD), one female is listed as 16 to 25 years old (Sarah MALLARD), one female is listed as 10 to 15 years old (Catherine MALLARD) and one female is listed as under 10 years old (Dorcas MALLARD).

John died in April 1812 in Duplin County, North Carolina. His Will, dated December 23, 1811, was exhibited in Court on April 21, 1812. The following is the Will: "wife Mary two beds and ther furneture, my house and plantation and as much of the furneture as she shall se preper; son William $150, one gun, one ax now in possession; son John 146 acres now in his possession; son James 180 acres now in his possession; son Gorge one mear, and $160; youngest son Asa all the rest of my lands, one gun and one cow and calf; daughter Nancy $10; daughter Sarah one bed and its furneture, one cow and calf now in hir possession; daughter Cathren one bed and furneture, one cow and calf now in hir possession; daughter Dorcas one bed and furneture, one cow and calf; at wifes decese ballance of stock of all kinds with my household kitchen and plantation furneture to Sarah, Cathern, Dorcas and Asa. Executors sons William Mallard and John Mallard; Witnesses: John Gilman, Wimbert Boney; Signed: John Mallard" Mary passed away on February 12, 1831 in Duplin County, North Carolina. The following was in the Thursday, March 10, 1831 issue of the Raleigh Star and NC State Gazette, "Mrs. Mary Mallard died in Duplin County, 12th ultimo, in her 77th year." It also appeared in the Monday March 7, 1831 issue of The Charleston Courier, "Died in Duplin County, North Carolina 12th ultimo, Mrs. Mary Mallard, aged 77."

Catherine MALLARD (George2, Peter1) was born about 1744 in Craven County (now Jones), North Carolina. She married Arthur STOKES in about 1763 in Craven County (now Jones), North Carolina. They had at least 11 children; seven sons and four daughters. I only know the name of two of the sons George STOKES and Ezekiel STOKES. They both moved to South Carolina in the late 1790s.

Catherine, Arthur and children moved to Duplin County by 1779. Jones County Deed Book B, page 6 reads as follows, "January 29, 1779 - Arthur Stoakes of Duplin County, North Carolina, farmer, to Josiah Wilson of Craven County, North Carolina, for 60 Pounds; 2 tracts of land; First tract patent by Emmanuel Simmons, 28 April 1768, for 150 Acres in Craven (now Jones) County south side of Trent River at Peter Amiet's corner to Flourence Sixes corner near Edmund Hatches line. Second tract patent by Thomas Thornton for Flourence Six, 22 July 1774; adjacent land of Emmanuel Simmons at Peter Amiet's line, continued 70 acres on south side of Trent River in Craven County. Witnesses: Roscow Lipsey, John Mallard, Cornelius D. Taylor."

Arthur STOKES appears as head of a household in the 1786 State census in Duplin County. It appears in this census that they had five sons and four daughters. It appears from Deed records that the STOKES moved back to Jones County in 1787. Arthur STOKES appears as head of a household in the 1790 Federal census of Jones County. It appears in this census that they had five sons and three daughters. One of their daughters may have married between 1786 and 1790. The next household listed is George Stokes. This seems to indicate that Arthur and Catherine had a sixth son who was born between 1786 and 1790.

In the late 1790s Arthur, Catherine and children moved to Barnwell District (now County), South Carolina. Arthur shows as the head of houseld in the 1800 and 1810 Federal census of Barnwell District, South Carolina. Only their son Ezekiel is listed in the 1820 Federal census of South Carolina. Arthur may have died in the 1810's in Barnwell District, South Carolina. I know nothing more about this family at this time.

Joseph MALLARD (George2, Peter1) was born about 1746 in Craven (now Jones) County, North Carolina. He most likely moved with his parents in 1777 or 1778 to Duplin County. He married Martha BROWN in Duplin County. I believe they were married about 1782. They had at least eight children: four sons and four daughters. Only one child is mentioned by name in his will Martha MALLARD. One of his daughters may have married a DICKSON (DIXON). It is possibly that this daughter was named Mary MALLARD. A marriage record dated December 11, 1806 in Duplin County for Mary MALLARD and Bennidick DICKSON may be her. One of the sons may have been named Bryan MALLARD. Bryan shows up in the 1830 Federal census of Duplin County. The surnames of some of Bryan's heirs were DIXON, HARGROVE and DUDLEY.

Joseph is listed as head of household in the 1786 State census of Duplin County. He and Martha had two children, daughters in 1786. If the Joseph MILLARD in the 1790 Federal census of Duplin County is actually Joseph MALLARD then one son and daughter were born between 1786 and 1790. The remaining three sons and one daughter would have been born between 1790 and 1800. In 1789 Joseph bought 100 acres in Duplin County from Temple and Thankful TILLIS. In 1797 Joseph bought 200 acres in Duplin County from Charles WARD.

Martha may have preceeded Joseph in death because she is not mentioned in his will. Jospeh died in 1827 in Duplin County, North Carolina. His Will, dated April 4, 1827, was exhibited in Court in the July 1827 term. The following is the Will: "all my lands be sold, one piece lying on Maxwell Swamp which I purchased from Thomas HEATH and his sister Betsey Ann, two heirs of William HEATH deceased, also another piece lying in and on Hill Swamp with my stock of horses, cattle, hogs and sheep, household and kitchen furniture, plantation tools except one feather bed and common cest [?] which I give to my granddaughter, Catherine DICKSON; money arising from the sale to be equally divided between all my children [not named] except daughter Martha who I give $30. Executor: worthy friend William MALLARD; Witnesses: A.(aron) MORGAN, Jacob HEATHE."

Daniel MALLARD (George2, Peter1) was born about 1748 in Craven (now Jones) County, North Carolina. Daniel is listed in his own household in the 1786 State Census of Duplin County. The household has only one member a male 21 to 60 years old (1726-1765). Daniel's father sold him 300 acres in Duplin County in 1787. Duplin County Deed Book 1A, Page 423 - "George Mallard to Daniel Mallard, both planters of Duplin County for 50 Pounds current money of North Carolina 300 acres in two tracts: First tract 100 acres on the west side of the NE River on Turkey Pen Branch, beginning at a chinquapin tree at the river swamp as by patent doth appear. Second tract 200 acres between the mouth of Persimmon and the Grove Swamp, beginning at a red oak on John Mallard's line, to a red oak by Charles Ward's line, to a water oak by Horse Branch. Witnesses: William Southerland, Elijah Mallard, Phill Southerland."

Daniel married Nancy LAMBARD on February 25, 1788 in Duplin County, North Carolina. On the Marriage bond the bondsmen were Robert BISHOP and John MALLARD. They had at least five children: three sons and two daughters. I am not certain what happen with this family. The MALLARD's of Burke County, Georgia believe that Daniel moved to Georgia in 1795. I am not sure what this is based on though. Whereas I cannot locate a Daniel MALLARD household in the 1790 census of Duplin County there is one listed in the 1800 Federal census. The 1806 tax list of Duplin County lists Daniel MALLARD as the owner of 349 acres. A Daniel MALLARD, Jr. is listed in the 1809 insolvents for Duplin County. The 1810 Federal census of Duplin County does not list a Daniel or Nancy MALLARD as head of household. There is a Daniel MALLARD listed in the 1820 Federal census of Emanuel County, Georgia. There are two males listed in the household. One is 18 to 26 years old (1794-1802) the other is under 10 years old (1811-1820). In 1820 Emanuel county bordered Burke, Screven and Bulloch Counties. This Daniel could be Daniel, Junior. Most likely this Daniel is the son of George MALLARD of Barnwell District, South Carolina.

Elijah MALLARD (George2, Peter1) was born about 1750 in Craven (now Jones) County, North Carolina. Elijah is a great enigma to me. Is he the fifth child of George and Comfort or is he their youngest child? There are many land and court records of Duplin County that mention the name of Elijah MALLARD. There is no census records in North Carolina that Elijah MALLARD is listed as the head of a household. There are several land records that indicate that Elijah MALLARD owned real estate in Duplin County. Elijah may be the other male listed in George MALLARD's household in the 1786 State census. That male was 21 to 60 years old (1726-1765). How is it possible that he could be missed in the 1790, 1800 and 1810 census? A Duplin County court record dated July 19, 1808 mentions an Elijah MALLARD, Jr. A July 21, 1813 Duplin County court record grants the administration of the estate of Elijah MALLARD to Joseph MALLARD. Is the Elijah MALLARD, with an estate dated 1813, the son of Daniel MALLARD or Peter MALLARD, Jr. of Craven (now Jones) County, North Carolina? Then this Elijah MALLARD would be a nephew to George MALLARD.

In Barnwell District now County, South Carolina was found some records that would suggest that some of George's grandchildren moved there. In the Barnwell District Deed Record Book C, a couple of these records were found. The first record is as follows, "31 January 1801 Ann Meadows of Winton County, South Carolina to George Mallard of the same, 32 acres - Test: James Lipsey, C. Boyls." South Carolina's Counties were called Districts until 1868. Some Districts did have subdivisions called Counties. Winton County was a subdivision of Orangeburg District. Around this time Winton County was separated from Orangeburg and made into a District. Further Winton was renamed Barnwell. Another Deed record is as follows, "19 June 1802 Joshua and Elizabeth Williams of Georgia, to George Mallard of Barnwell District, South Carolina for $175.00, 200 acres -Test: Ezekiel Stokes, George Stokes." In Barnwell District Will Book 'A', on page 154 is the record of a George MALLARD's will. This will lists the name of his wife and children. Their names are as follow: Wife Easter, children's Daniel, Dewring, Sarah, Rachel, Nancy, and Hester Ann. We have found Dewring's name, spelled Duran in other Barnwell records. There is a marriage record in Craven County, North Carolina, dated July 06, 1794, between a George MALLARD and Esther HOBBS. This may be George and Easter's marriage record. The will was dated September 12, 1812 and witnessed by Ezekiel STOKES and Joseph ALLEN. On October 31, 1812, Ezekiel STOKES made a sworn statement before the Ordinary of Barnwell District, regarding George MALLARD's will. In Ezekiel's statement he stated the will was George's true will, he also said that George and he were cousins. I believe George MALLARD, James LIPSEY, Ezekiel STOKES and George STOKES to be grandsons of George MALLARD of Duplin County, North Carolina.

It is possibly that this George is the son of John MALLARD. In John's will he lists a son named George. He could also be the son of Joseph, Daniel or Elijah MALLARD. I don't believe he is the son of John. I believe this because there was also an Adam Mallard in the Barnwell District. It would appear from similar records that Adam was also a grandson of George Mallard of Duplin County, North Carolina. I believe George and Adam are brothers. John MALLARD did not list a son named Adam in his will. Besides in the 1820 Federal census of Duplin County a George MALLARD is listed as the head of a household. Only one person is listed in the home a male 26 to 44 years old (1776-1794). Further, an estate for a George MALLARD was probated in Duplin County in 1822. The U.S. Census of Eighteen Hundred for Barnwell District, South Carolina lists both George and Adam. They are both listed in the 26 to 44 years old ranges (1756 to 1774). In Adam's census record the females are under 10 years old which would suggest him to be a widower. George's census record has three females, two under 10 years old and one 16 to 25 years old. If Easter or Esther was 16 to 25 years old (1775 to 1784), this would place George and Adam's date of birth in the 1760's or 1770's. In the North Carolina State Census of 1786 neither Joseph nor Daniel had males listed other than themselves. This only seems to leave Elijah MALLARD as a possible father to George and Adam. The MALLARD's of Bullock County, Georgia believes they are descended from George's son Duran.

I believe that Elijah MALLARD, Jr. was the Elijah MALLARD who filed a marriage bond on October 15, 179(5?) in Onslow County, North Carolina. The Bond doesn't have the date completed on it, but occurred during Governor Richard Dobbs SPAIGHT, Sr. term. His term as the Governor was from December 14, 1792 until November 19, 1795. The marriage was between Elijah MALLARD and Polley BALLARD.

Sarah MALLARD (George2, Peter1) was born about 1754 in Craven (now Jones) County, North Carolina. She married Rosco(e) LIPSEY in the early 1770s in Craven (now Jones) County, North Carolina. They had at least eight children: five sons and three daughters. The names of some of the children are: Rosco(e) LIPSEY, Jr., James LIPSEY, Amasa LIPSEY and Bathsheba LIPSEY.

Sarah and Rosco(e) stayed in Jones County, North Carolina. Rosco(e) died in 1808 in Jones County, North Carolina. His will was dated November 13, 1807 and probated in 1808 in Jones County, North Carolina. Sarah is listed as the head of household in the 1810 Federal census of Jones County, North Carolina. Some of Sarah's children moved to South Carolina. but she stayed in North Carolina. Sarah died on July 13, 1835 in Jones County, North Carolina. In the Friday, July 17, 1835 issue of the New Bern Spectator is the following "Died in Jones County near Trenton on Monday, Mrs. Sarah Lipsey in her 81st year of age."
