William F.(letcher?) MALLARD (Lewis2, Elijah1) was born April 16, 1824 in Georgia most likely Warren County. William moved to Baker County, Georgia with his parents in the late 1830s or early 1840s. In the 1850 Federal census of Baker County, Georgia, William is listed in another home as a laborer. He married Sarah Jane PHELPS on April 12, 1857 in Mitchell County, Georgia. A.(llan?) Turner MALLARD (Lewis2, Elijah1) was born about 1827 in Georgia probably Lincoln County. That Turner is the son of Lewis and Hannah is an assumption at this point. Hannah's father was named Benjamin and one of Turner's son is also named Benjamin. Lewis' daughter, Almedia, had a son named Turner. Turner would have moved to Baker County, Georgia with his parents in the late 1830s or early 1840s. In the 1850 Federal census of Baker County, Georgia, Turner is listed in another home as a laborer. He married Mary Louisa CORDLY on June 20, 1858 in Baker County, Georgia. Louisa was born about 1838 in Georgia. They had at least four children: M. E. Sometime before the Civil War she married Edmund CLAYTON. They had the following children: George F. CLAYTON and James Lewis CLAYTON.

Edmund served in a Georgia Regiment of the Confederate Army during the Civil War. He was killed in action. Georgie died in 1867, her sons were raised by her brother William.

According to his military records he deserted on March 24, 1865. John deserted 16 days before the surrender of the Army.

Sometime after the war he moved to Thomas County, Georgia. Possibly because his parents and younger sisters had moved to Decatur County. In any case he met and married Elizabeth MALOY. John and Elizabeth were married on July 4, 1867 in Thomasville, Thomas County, Georgia. They had the following Children: Franklin MALLARD, Maneny MALLARD, Reaters Carswell MALLARD, John Lathrop "Lathe" MALLARD, Zora MALLARD and Charlotte Maude MALLARD.

John, Elizabeth and children are listed in the 1880 Federal Census of Brooks County, Georgia. Elizabeth died in about 1882 most likely in Brooks County, Georgia. John remarried on June 3, 1883 in Thomas County, Georgia to B. H. BEASLEY. She must have died only few years after their marriage. John marries for a third time to Josephine COX on September 8, 1889 also in Thomas County, Georgia. John died in 1923 in Colquitt County, Georgia. He is buried at the Marchman/Taylor Cemetery near Omega, Georgia.

Luticia F. MALLARD (John2, Elijah1) was born about 1856 in Franklin County, Georgia. She was called by the nickname Tisher. As mentioned, Tisher stayed with her grandmother, Judy VARNER, in Franklin County. Judy was born about 1795 in The Southwest Territory. The Southwest Territory is now the state of Tennessee. Tisher married a James T. "Jim" PRATER in 1877 in Franklin County. James went by the name of Jim. He was born about 1862 in Georgia. Not much is known about Tisher and Jim's lives. It has been reported that they didn't have any children.

William Causby Dawson MALLARD (John2, Elijah1) was born near Carnesville, Franklin County, Georgia. His date of birth was on February 04, 1859. As mentioned above in 1870 he moved with his mother and brother to Jackson County. It would appear from the 1880 census of Jackson County, Georgia that Dawson's wife to be, lived at a neighbors home. He married Sarah Ann HARWELL on December 24, 1882 in Jackson County, Georgia. They were joined in the Holy State of Matrimony by H. C. APPLEBY a Justice of the Peace. David MALLARD, Dawson's nephew, stated her name was Sarah Elizabeth HARWELL. He also said that they called her Aunt Sally. David said that Aunt Sally was older, about 15 years (1844), then Uncle Dawson. Their marriage license reads Sarah Ann HARWELL or HARVELL. In the 1900 Federal censuses of Jackson County, her name is given as Sarah A. MALLARD. It also gives her date of birth as November 1843 in Georgia. Her age is given as 34 years old (1845 or 1846) in the 1880 census. Sally may have been the daughter of James J. and Jane HARVEL. The 1850 Federal Census of Jackson County lists a Sarah E. HARVEL as a child of James J. and Jane HARVEL. The Sarah listed in this record was one year old (1848 or 1849) and born in Georgia. In the Jackson County Deed records James' name is spelled HARVILL. On Dawson and Sally's marriage certificate it is spelled HARVILLE. They had the following children: Infant MALLARD and John Wesley MALLARD, II

According to the 1900 Federal Census Dawson and Sally were tenant farmers. After the Civil War, the break up of the large plantations resulted in the rise of tenant farming and share cropping. These systems were often accompanied by poverty and abuse from the landlords. Dawson died on August 26, 1908 in Jackson County, Georgia. He died of Typhoid Fever. Typhoid Fever is a disease with a communicable fever, caused by a germ (Salmonella Typhosa) taken into the body with food or drink. It is marked by intestinal inflammation and a rose-colored rash on the abdomen and chest. Sally died September 1910 in Jackson County, Georgia. Sally died of Cancer. Dawson and Sally are buried at Mountain Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. The Cemetery is located near Talmo, Jackson County, Georgia.

Lewis Anthony MALLARD (John2, Elijah1) was born in Franklin County, Georgia. Anthony was born on February 04, 1859. As stated previously he moved to Jackson County, Georgia with his mother and brother. Anthony was married to Celia Ann BLACKBURN. She was most likely related to Anthony's step-father. They were married in Jackson County, Georgia on December 25, 1885. Celia was born in Jackson County, Georgia on June 11, 1870. I have been told Anthony had the Bible memorized. You could tell him a bible text he could then quote the passage. They had the following children: Rachel MALLARD, Lula MALLARD, David MALLARD, Mary Emma MALLARD, Rudolph MALLARD and Louis Alfred MALLARD

According to Jackson County, Georgia Pauper Farm records Anthony, Celia, Rachel and David were admitted to the farm on July 26, 1895. It doesn't list a specific disease, only that they were diseased. It would appear this may have been what Lula died of on July 10, 1895.

A farm depression in Georgia had begun long before the Great Depression of the 1920s. To make things even worse there was a drought in 1925. Because of the drought Anthony's son, Rudolph, had gone to Lexington, North Carolina. He went to North Carolina to look for work. Rudolph found work there and sent for his wife and family. Within a couple of weeks Anthony, Celia and their youngest child Alfred moved to North Carolina. They lived in a rural community called Reeds, near Lexington, Davidson County, North Carolina. Anthony died of pneumonia on November 07, 1929 in Tyro, Davidson County, North Carolina. Celia also died of pneumonia on January 31, 1936 near Lexington, North Carolina. They were both buried at the Reeds Baptist Church Cemetery.
