Sarah Ann PRATOR (Philip2, John1) was born on February 6, 1828 in Jefferson County, Alabama. She married William Truehart CLAUNCH on November 27, 1849 in Hempstead County, Arkansas. William was born on February 1, 1830 in St. Clair County, Alabama. They had the following children: Nancy "Nannie" CLAUNCH, Edwin Ruthwin "Eddie" CLAUNCH, Georgia CLAUNCH, Richard W. CLAUNCH, Laura CLAUNCH, Julia Sinclair CLAUNCH, Nigel CLAUNCH and William Bayliss CLAUNCH.

Sarah and William moved from Arkansas to Hays County, Texas in about 1851. According to the 1860 census of Hays County William was a Farmer. During the Civil War William served as a Private in A Company, 36th Texas Cavarly Regiment, C. S. A. (1862-1864). In about 1869 they moved from Hays County to Hamilton County, Texas. William was one of the founders of the Rock House Masonic Lodge # 417 in Hamilton County on June 4, 1875. He was also one of the first elected officers of the Lodge on July 3, 1875.

William died on September 1, 1879 in Rock House, Hamilton County, Texas. He was buried in September 1879 at The Rock House Church Cemetery in Hamilton County, Texas. She died on November 17, 1919 in Fort Worth, Tarrant County, Texas. Sarah was buried in November 1919 at The Rock House Church Cemetery, in Hamilton County, Texas.


Richard W. PRATER (John2, John1) was born in August 18, 1833 in Anderson District, South Carolina. He married Juliette Elizabeth ORR on December 12, 1857 in Benton (now Calhoun) County, Alabama. Juliette was born on January 28, 1837 in Madisonville, Monroe County, Tennessee. They had the following children: T. Josephine PRATER, John Finley PRATER, Sarah A. PRATER, Tommie Jane PRATER and Coke Carroll PRATER.

They were still in Calhoun County in the 1870 census. They moved to Texas sometime after 1870. He died in 1907 in Collins County, Texas. She died in March 27, 1903 in Collins County, Texas.


Ann Eliza SHIPLEY (Lydia PRATER2, John1) was born about 1832 in Georgia. She married James Abner PEACE on January 16, 1854 in Benton (now Calhoun) County, Alabama. James was born on February 10, 1833 in Granville County, North Carolina. He was the son of John Easter and Edith Winston PEACE. They had the following children: Eliza Anna PEACE, John B. PEACE, Edith C. "Edy" PEACE, and Mary E. "Molly" PEACE

James enlisted as a Private in a Calhoun County Company commanded by Captain Henry MC BEE. At Talladega, Alabama on April 16, 1862 McBee's Company joined several other companies to form the 30th Alabama Infantry Regiment, CSA. The company was then designated as "E" Company. The Regiment was commanded by Colonel Charles M. SHELLEY of Talladega County, Alabama. The 30th was ordered to East Tennesse to the forces commanded by Major General E. Kirby SMITH. In November 1862 the 30th was placed in the Alabama Brigade. The Brigade was placed in General Carter L. STEVENSON'S Division. Their Division was ordered to Vicksburg, Mississippi in December 1862. They arrived at Vicksburg on January 1, 1863. The Regiment surrendered with General Pemberton's Army on July 4, 1863 and was paroled. They marched to Demopolis, Alabama to await exchange. While there, General Pemberton furloughed the men and allowed them to go home for 30 days. He died on January 24, 1864 in Cassville, Bartow County, Georgia.

Ann eventually followed her brothers out to Texas in 1867. She died on July 1, 1895 in Fort Worth, Tarrant County, Texas. Ann is buried at the East Oak Cemetery in Tarrant County, Texas.


Margaret R.(ebecca?) PRATER (James2, John1) was born in February 1833 in Anderson District (now County), South Carolina. She came with her parents to Benton County, Alabama as a toddler. Margaret married Jeffree Jesse PEACE on July 30, 1851 in Benton (now Calhoun) County, Alabama. Jeffree Jesse PEACE was born on April 3, 1831 in Granville County, North Carolina. Jesse was the son of John Easter and Edith Winston PEACE. They had the following children: Margaret Edith PEACE, Louisa Catherine PEACE, Amanda Jane PEACE, Martha M. "Mattie" PEACE and James Henry Fornie PEACE. [C1]

Jesse enlisted May 3, 1862 as a Private in a Calhoun County Company, commanded by Captain Moses LEE. At Auburn, Lee County, Alabama this Company became K Company of the 48th Alabama Infantry Regiment on May 22, 1862. The 48th was commanded by Colonel James L. SHEFFIELD of Marshall County, Alabama. A few weeks later the 48th was ordered to Virginia to join the Army of Northern Virginia. The 48th was put in the Stonewall Brigade, commanded by General William B. TALIAFERRO. This Brigade was in Brigadier General John R. JONES' Division. Jones' Division was in Major General Thomas J. "Stonewall" JACKSON'S II Corp of The Army of Northern Virginia C.S.A. On August 9, 1862 Jackson, with his 11,000 men, met Union Major General John POPE'S 40,000 men at Cedar Mountain, defeated it, and obliged POPE to regroup. Jesse was mortally wounded that day at The Battle of Cedar Run. This was the first engagement that the 48th would be in, but Jesse's only one. He died on August 14, 1862 in Gordonsville, Orange County, Virginia.

Margaret appears in the 1870 census of Calhoun County living next to her parents. I have not been able to locate her in the 1880 census of Calhoun County. Margaret was living near Hico, Hamilton County, Texas in 1900 according to the 12th U. S. Census, taken June 1, 1900, of Hamilton County, Texas. Two of her brothers Bale and William lived there also. In her brother's, John, obituary in 1910 she is listed as living in Texas. She may have died in Hamilton County, Texas.


Sarah Catharine PRATER (James2, John1) was born on October 19, 1841 in Benton (now Calhoun) County, Alabama. She married Riley M. PENNY on October 18, 1860 in Calhoun County, Alabama. Riley was born about 1837 in Granville County, North Carolina. He was the son of Ezekiel and Catharine PENNY. Riley's parents lived in Cherokee County, Alabama. They had the following child: William B. PENNY.

On April 30, 1862 Riley enlisted at Cedar Bluff in Cherokee County, Alabama as a Private in a Company, commanded by Captain J. M. CAMPBELL. His enlistment was for three years or the War. Riley's military records gives a physical description of him. He is listed as fair complected, blue eyes, dark hair and 6 feet 1 inch tall. Campbell's Company, designated as "E" Company, and several other companies were organized on May 22, 1862 as the 47th Alabama Infantry Regiment. Colonel James M. Oliver, of Tallapoosa County, was given the command of the 47th. In June 1862 the 47th was ordered to Virginia to join the Army of Northern Virginia. They were Brigaded with three Virginia Regiments and the 48th Alabama, commanded by General William B. TALIAFERRO. This Brigade was in Brigadier General John R. JONES' Division. Jones' Division was in Major General Thomas J. "Stonewall" JACKSON'S II Corp of The Army of Northern Virginia C.S.A. The 47th first engagement at the Battle of Cedar Run was Riley's last. He was killed in action on August 9, 1862 near Gordonsville, Orange County, Virginia.

Sarah is listed as living the Ball Play area of Calhoun County in her brother's obituary in 1910. She died on January 27, 1913 in Calhoun County, Alabama. Sarah was buried in 1913 at The Littlejohn Cemetery in Calhoun County, Alabama.


John Wesley PRATER (James2, John1) was born on September 8, 1846 in Benton (now Calhoun) County, Alabama. During the Civil War John served as a Private in Wheeler's Escort from September 1863 until 4 March 1864. He re-enlisted in March 1864 as a Private in G Company, commanded by Captain WEAVER, 12th Alabama Cavalry "Partisan Rangers" Regiment. The Regiment was commanded by Colonel Warren S. REESE of Montgomery County, Alabama. The 12th was in Brigader General James HAGAN'S Brigade. This Brigade was in Major General Joseph WHEELER'S Cavalry Division of The Army of the Tennessee C. S. A. One of its companies lost 20 killed and wounded while defending a bridge near Rome, Georgia. At Atlanta, July 22, 1864, General Joseph Wheeler complimented the regiment on the field, and it lost 25 or 30 men in a hilt to hilt melee with Union General Stoneman's raiders. At Campbellsville, the 12th repulsed Brownlow's Brigade, losing 45 men. At Averysboro and the attack on Kilpatrick, and other places, the regiment fought until the end. It disbanded the night before the surrender -- about 125 present -- on 25 April 1865. John served until the surrender in North Carolina. He was paroled at Chapel Hill, North Carolina in April 1865.

He married Julia ALLSUP on December 6, 1867 in Calhoun County, Alabama. Julia was born on March 7, 1845 in Alabama. They had the following children: Ida R. PRATER, Wiley T. PRATER, James K. PRATER, Lula PRATER and Jennie PRATER

John died on February 8, 1910 near Piedmont, Calhoun County, Alabama. He was buried in February 1910 at the Goshen Cemetery. The Goshen Cemetery is located half in Calhoun County and half in Cherokee County, Alabama. Julia made a application for a Confederate veteran or widow Pension on December 7, 1914 in Calhoun County, Alabama. She died on February 26, 1934 in Alabama. Julia was buried in 1934 also at The Goshen Cemetery.


James Caper PRATER (James2, John1) was born in September 1852 in Benton (now Calhoun) County, Alabama. He married Margarett G. MOONY on August 28, 1871 in Calhoun County, Alabama[M1]. Margarett G. MOONY was born in July 1853 in Alabama. They had the following known children: Emma PRATER, James H. PRATER, John P. PRATER, Benjamin PRATER and Bessie J. PRATER. According to the 1900 census Margarett was the mother of six children.

In the 1880 census they are living in Calhoun County, Alabama. James and Margaret were living in Etowah County, Alabama in 1900 according to the census. When James' sister-in-law, Julia, made a application for a pension in 1914 he was listed as living near Gadsden in Etowah County. I do not know anymore about their lives.


Bailus Asbury "Bale" PRATER (James2, John1) was born on April 20, 1855 in Benton (now Calhoun) County, Alabama. He married Vianna Ladora "Viney" SHERBET on January 10, 1878 in Calhoun Co., Alabama [M3]. Viney was born on March 3, 1857 near Cross Plains (now Piedmont), Benton (now Calhoun) County, Alabama. She is the daughter of Aaron Simeon "S.P." and Adaline Littlejohn SHERBET. They had the following children: John Wesley PRATER, Permelia Caroline "Melia" PRATER and Robert Lloyd "Bob" PRATER.

They are listed in the 1880 Calhoun County census living in the same home as Viney's brother Billy. In the late 1880's or early 1890's Bale, Viney, John, Melia and Bob moved from Calhoun County, Alabama to Hamilton County, Texas near Hico. They are listed in the 1900 Hamilton County, Texas census near viney's parents.

Bale died on November 13, 1937 in Hico, Hamilton County, Texas. He was buried in November 1937 at The Hico Cemetery, Hico, Hamilton County, Texas. Viney died on June 3, 1950 in Hico, Hamilton County, Texas. She was buried in June 1950 also at The Hico Cemetery, Hico, Hamilton County, Texas.


William Mack PRAT(H)ER (James2, John1) was born in March 1857 in Benton (now Calhoun) County, Alabama. He married Elizabeth C. RICHEY on July 26, 1885 in Calhoun County, Alabama. Elizabeth was born in December 01, 1871 in Alabama. They had the following children: Fletcher T. PRATER, Terry B. PRATER, Edwin A. "Eddie" PRATER, Martha A. PRATER, Rufus Traylor PRATER, Mary Rebecca PRATER, Ernest L. PRATER and Lillian Mae PRATER.

He is listed in the home of his parents in the 1880 census of Calhoun County, Alabama. It appears from the birth of their children they moved to Texas around 1896 or 1897. William was living in Hamilton County, Texas in 1900 according to the census. In his brother's, John, obituary he is listed as living in Texas still. Not much else is known of the family at this time.

John Henry PRATER (Andrew2, John1) was born on January 16, 1845 in Benton (now Calhoun) County, Alabama. In 1850s his parents moved the family to Cherokee County, Alabama. In the 1860s they moved to Baine (now Etowah) County, Alabama. They may not have moved at all, part of what is now Etowah County was taken from Cherokee County.

He enlisted in 1863 in 12th Alabama Cavalry "Partisan Rangers" Regiment. The Regiment was commanded by Colonel Warren S. RESACA. The 12th was in Brigader General James HAGAN'S Brigade. This Brigade was in Major General Joseph WHEELER'S Cavalry Division of The Army of the Tennessee C. S. A. John served until the surrender (25 April 1865) in North Carolina. He was paroled at Chapel Hill, North Carolina in April 1865.

He married Louisa Matilda THOMPSON on October 15, 1866 in Coats Bend, Baine (now Etowah) County, Alabama. Louisa was born on August 27, 1849 near Gadsden, Cherokee (now Etowah) County, Alabama. They had the following children: Ellenor M. PRATER, Walter Andrew PRATER, Martha E. "Mattie" PRATER, Eula Lee PRATER, John Roedolphus PRATER and Julius Edgar PRATER.

John and Louisa moved to Texas shortly after their marriage. They settled north of Melisa, Texas and south of Van Alstyne, Texas. They developed the land and created a ranch. In about 1879 they moved to Cross Cut in Brown County, Texas. John died on February 20, 1919 in Cross Cut, Brown County, Texas. Louisa died on August 8, 1926 in Cross Cut, Brown County, Texas.


Mark C. LIVELY Jr (Elizabeth PRATER2, John1) was born on November 8, 1842 near Wetumpka, Autauga (now Elmore) County, Alabama. His mother moved the family back to Benton (now Calhoun) County, after the death of his father in 1843. In the 1850s he moved with his family to Cherokee County, Alabama.

Mark moved back to Calhoun County in the 1860s and lived there until at least 1880. He married Martha C. NEAL on October 15, 1863 in Calhoun County, Alabama. Martha was born on May 25, 1840 in Alabama. They had the following children: George W. LIVELY, M.(ark?) C. LIVELY(,III?), Eliza LIVELY, Jossie LIVELY, Daisy LIVELY and Ora Belle LIVELY. Sometime in the 1880s or 1890s they moved to DeKalb County, Alabama.

Mark died on November 30, 1909 near Fort Payne, DeKalb County, Alabama. He was buried in 1909 at The Glenwood Cemetery in Fort Payne. Martha died on November 24, 1912 near Fort Payne. She was also buried at The Glenwood Cemetery in Fort Payne.


William Henry ALLEN (Elizabeth PRATER2, John1) was born on November 25, 1855 in Alabama, most likely in Cherokee County. He met and married Amanda H. ESTES in Cherokee County, Alabama. Amanda is the daughter of Isaac Newton and Letitia M. Boozer ESTES. She was born March 13, 1870 in Alabama. They had the following children: Newton Memory ALLEN, Ludie J. ALLEN, Joel Franklin ALLEN, and David Emmet "Doc" ALLEN.

Henry died on January 29, 1943 in Cherokee County, Alabama. He was buried on January 31, 1943 at Taylor's Chapel in Cherokee County, Alabama. Amanda died on January 17, 1966 in Cherokee County, Alabama. She was buried on January 20, 1966 also at Taylor's Chapel.
