1963 Chevrolet Greenbrier

The Greenbrier was manufactured between 1961 and 1965 by Chevrolet.  It was a van powered by the same rear-mounted, air-cooled 6 cylinder engine that powered the infamous Corvair cars that made Ralph Nader so well known.  Pick-up and panel van versions were also available.

Purchased in May of 1994. This van was a mechanical mess when I rescued it out of a local salvage yard. I spent the next three years repairing and rebuilding everything in order to make it a reliable daily driver.

When I bought this van, it had 4 mismatched wheels. I found a set of 1991 Chevrolet S-10 rims in a local newspaper at a good price.

Very few of these vans are still in regular use.  The few that are still around are either rusting away in a field or driven only to shows.

Here is a look at the engine. This is the first Corvair engine I have built and it went smoothly. The secret is READ THE SERVICE MANUAL BEFORE TEARING THE ENGINE APART. Notice the remote oil cooler lines that come out of the top of the alternator mount and don't interfere with the fan belt. Engine is nearly stock except for the internally regulated alternator, magnesium fan, electric fuel pump and a mild camshaft.

One of the more recent improvements is the dual exhaust system.  I used a kit from Clark's Corvair Parts.  The hangers that came with the kit were not used.  Instead, I fabricated a one piece mount that both mufflers attach to.  The mount bolts to the engine skid plate.

Ultimate Retro-Hip!  New feature is a new old stock (NOS) Mecca AM/FM 8 track player. Look closely and you will also notice Autometer oil pressure and oil temperature gauges and Corvair 95 bucket seats.  You will also see a fire extinguisher in the lower right corner. A good idea in any car.

Ernie Kovacs crashes his Corvair.
